Chefs Advisory Board
The best way to keep up with food trends, today’s diners’ sophisticated palates, and the needs of the foodservice industry is to go straight to the professionals who create the trends—acclaimed chefs. In 2005, the Vidalia Onion Committee created a star-studded Vidalia Chefs Advisory Board (CAB).
Founding members were: Jeffrey Buben of Vidalia Restaurant and Bistro Bis in Washington, D.C.; Steven Lewandowski of New York City’s esteemed Tribeca Grill; Jay Murray of Grill 23 & Bar in Boston; and Michael Tuohy who at that time owned Woodfire Grill in Atlanta.
Tuohy—Independent Food & Beverage Consultant; restaurants, hotels & resorts, clubs, gourmet specialty retail—and our other CAB members have grown with us these past few years, taking on even more culinary adventures as we continue to induct more top-caliber chefs into our advisory panel.
We doubled the size of our CAB in 2006, adding Food Network’s saucy, southern Paula Deen; Jon Ashton of Relish magazine, Brian Stapleton of The Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill, NC; and Celina Tio of The American Restaurant in Kansas City, MO.
In 2010, we were honored to see three of our culinary colleagues nominated for the prestigious James Beard award; Buben’s Vidalia Restaurant, Michael Schwartz of Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink in Miami, and Atlanta’s Kevin Gillespie, who will be opening his much-anticipated restaurant Gunshow in spring 2013.
Another Top Chef, season four fan fave Spike Mendelsohn, joined the CAB ranks in 2009. Spike helps us develop delicious Vidalia recipes when he’s not winning the South Beach Food & Wine Burger Bash or grilling up delectable burgers and Vidalia onion rings for the Obamas at his D.C. restaurant, Good Stuff Eatery.
